Don Hanson has been the co-owner of the Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor, Maine, where he is also the Director of Behavior Counseling and Training since 1995. Green Acres offers boarding, daycare, grooming, pet food and supplies, training and behavior consulting. They have been voted the Best Kennel, Pet Store, Dog Trainer, and Groomer in the region for many years. Don is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC), Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), Bach Foundation Registered Animal Practitioner (BFRAP) and an Associate Certified Cat Behavior Consultant (ACCBC).

Community involvement is very important to Don. While he lived in Wisconsin he served on the Board of the Madison Audubon Society from 1989 through 1995, four years as its President. After moving to Maine he served on the Board of the Bangor Humane Society for fifteen years, five as its President. Through Green Acres, Don, his wife, and his staff have created several successful fundraising events for the Bangor Humane Society, the EAAA Furry Friends Food Bank, the Rabies Challenge Fund and BARKK To End the Silence. Don is also a member of the Paul Bunyan Chapter of Business Networks International and Bangor Breakfast Rotary. He is a graduate of the Bangor Region Leadership Institute.

Don has also been an incredibly active force within the APDT, serving on the Board of Trustees for 9 years and as the Board Chair in 2007, 2011, and 2012. He has a special interest in education and the raising of "professionalism" in the dog training industry. Don has been a member of all educational taskforces of the APDT and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Education Advisory Group and the Nominating Committee.
