Oct 16, 2015 9:00am ‐ Oct 16, 2015 12:15pm

Standard: $20.00

Description

Shelters around the world use behavioral assessments to determine whether dogs are aggressive or safe. How effective are these tests? Are dangerous dogs being sent home and are safe dogs being denied a chance at adoption? In this session, we will learn about recent research into shelter behavior assessments. How effective are some widely-used tests? How hard is it to design and test an effective behavior assessment? What are recent innovations in methods for determining effectiveness in behavior assessments? We will discuss the most recent research in detail (those who attended the previous day's "Demystifying the Scientific Paper" session will get another chance to practice their skills), and finish up by considering together the question of what to recommend to shelters which want to implement behavioral testing.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss the effectiveness of some widely-used behavioral assessments
  • Describe and analyze recent research on the effectiveness of behavioral assessments
  • Assess the pros and cons of using behavioral assessments in a shelter
